Nick and Madeline,
Good afternoon from Gibraltar!
Yesterdays event was a resounding success and I am pleased to tell you that the 426metres of the Rock were successfully abseiled during what was a glorious, hot and sunny afternoon.
The abseilers ranged from the experienced to the completely unindoctrinated. Lots of the wives of the personnel serving in Gibraltar donned their C4B shirts and abseiled the Rooke Officers Mess too. There were a few hairy moments for some but happily everybody walked away with no injurys!
POPTI Karl Hille provided unstinting support in ensuring that the abseilers were well briefed and safe and a special thanks is due to him and Jimmy without whom this event would not have happened. It was 26 degrees on the roof yesterday with little breeze or shade and the pair of them did a magificent job. Thanks lads.
BFBS Gibraltar Charlene Guy, a complete novice (and nominated by her boss Mario) completed the descent live on air broadcasting to the the Gibraltar Service Community. There were most definately a few screams during that.
The local service Public Relations Officers and Command Photographer were present throughout the day and I expect some very good photographs and comments soon.
As an added incentive a local bar/restaurant O'Reillys on Ocean Village gave each abseiler a free voucher which enabled them to claim a glass of cava and tapas! Very generous and extremely well received. Thankyou to the Manager there.
We are currently counting the pennies and hope to have a final figure on the amount raised by the twenty two intrepid abseilers and as soon as I obtain the photographs I will ensure that they are posted on the website and sent to you by email.
All in all a very successful and enjoyable day.
I will be in touch again shortly - take care all of you
Jan
