Dear Members of Challenge4Ben
The year 2009 is fast coming to an end but it has been a very momentous first year for Challenge4Ben. Through your encouragement, participation, generosity and continued support, we are delighted to announce that the fundraising through Challenge4Ben has exceeded our wildest expectations. We set off to raise £15,000 to be split between Help For Heroes and Jersey Hospice Care. As we close the books for 2009, we are delighted, humbled and deeply honoured to announce…

Nick and Madeline,
Good afternoon from Gibraltar!
Yesterdays event was a resounding success and I am pleased to tell you that the 426metres of the Rock were successfully abseiled during what was a glorious, hot and sunny afternoon.
The abseilers ranged from the experienced to the completely unindoctrinated. Lots of the wives of the personnel serving in Gibraltar donned their C4B shirts and abseiled the Rooke Officers Mess too. There were a few hairy moments for some but happily everybody walk…

SATURDAY 29th AUGUST 2009 – OFFICIAL ARRIVAL IN GIBRALTAR
This was the day that finally marked the end of the JAUNT2GIB. It was the day that we had all been working towards and marked the end of months of planning, preparation and effort. In one way it was a sad event, as in a few days time it will be back to normal life and work! It also reminded us why we were here and the sad events that brought about the Challenge4Ben, Jaunt2Gib. In other ways, it was a great celebration of all that has gon…

Congratulations! We have been following your progress since we met you on the pontoon at Pornichet (that seems a long while ago) and are full of admiration for your courage and tenacity. What an amazing achievement. We wish you well in your fund raising. Graham added a little today to the Help for Heroes fund but missed the slot to leave the above message!
Best wishes to you both and your support team.

Even as we draw to the end of the Jaunt2Gib, two intrepid people are reaching the finale of their Challenge4Ben by cycling from John o Groats to Lands End in memory of Ben, who was at university with Russ in Bristol. We cannot thank them enough for undertaking this challenge and hope t…

Day 55 TUESDAY 18th AUGUST 2009 - MAZAGON – ROTA
Road Miles: 137.miles
Sea Miles: 41.8 nm
The boys left just before 09:00 and Jane and I went back to the campsite and got everything organised and left fairly quickly, but not before I took some pictures of the incredible set up of alley ways of tents under metal frames. Some even had purpose made parking areas for cars to keep out of the sunshine!!! On looking at the satnav the previous evening, the route showed that we would drive through part…

Day 56 WEDNESDAY 19th AUGUST 2009 - ROTA – BARBATE
Road Miles: 58.7 miles
Sea Miles: 41.8 nm
The boys were away by 08:50 but not before I had made use of the marina laundry machines! Today was the day when Nick and James would be passing Cape Trafalgar and Nick would be making his speech at Cape Trafalgar to commemorate his hero Admiral Lord Nelson!! Jane had made Nick a bunch of paper flowers wrapped in gold ribbon to throw into the water at Cape Trafalgar and I asked her to make him a tricor…

Day 54 MONDAY 17th AUGUST 2009 - ISLA CRISTINA – MAZAGON
Road Miles: 40.9 miles
Sea Miles: 28.3 nm
Having moved back into Spain yesterday, everyone changed their watches back into Central European Time, so it was a bit of a surprise this morning when we woke up at what was supposed to be 07:00, to find that no one had changed the alarm clock and it was 08:00!! The boys immediately put it down to how tired they must be to need the extra hour’s sleep, which was nothing short of a poor attempt t…

Thinking of you all!
Well done for getting so far, especially in such heat and with no wind!
We tried to tow a tiny little canoe the other day and found it really difficult.
Jersey weather not too great ( we are still waiting for the heat wave ) but it hasn't stopped us swimming and boating.
Have fun. Keep up the good work.
All our love

Well it's only taken six days, but we've finally made it across the border, and are at present sat in a pub in Carlisle having a pie and chips to celebrate. The trip so far has taken us coast to coast in Scotland, via Loch Ness and the Isle of Arran, not particularly flat or direct, but theoretically very picturesque. Had it not been for the gale force Southerly winds, driving rain and saddle sore it may have even been a pleasent journey!!
Whilst being escorted to a B&B in Carlisle by the m…
